Armistice Day in World War I

Today, on Armistice Day in World War I, we remember the Golgotha that our country and
our people went through during the war years, but also we remember the perseverance and heroism of our famous ancestors, to whom we owe our existence today.

The Serbian people was the biggest victim of World War I. The Central Powers, driven by
imperial ambitions, tried to erase a small but freedom-loving country from the map. In that
war, Serbia lost more than a quarter of its population and 62 percent of the working-age male population.

It will remain etched in the annals of world military history that the courageous Serbian people achieved the first victory for the Allies on Mount Cer.

The devastated Serbian state and the suffering Serbian people rose from the ashes, just like
the indestructible Natalie’s ramonda flower, an emblem that we proudly wear close to our hearts today.

Serbia paid a high price for freedom in World War I, which is why our country and its citizens will continue to protect Serbian statehood, freedom and independence as supreme national values. Long live Serbia!

Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Djuric had talks in Brussels today with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.

After the meeting, Djuric stated that he is visiting Brussels today because Europe is important for Serbia, but that Serbia is, at the same time, important for Europe as well.

The Minister said that he and Borrell, among other issues, discussed ways for bringing Serbia and the EU as close as possible in the context of fundamental matters.

“Serbia has already made exceptional steps forward in recent years, under the leadership of President Vucic, in strengthening our economy, developing infrastructure, the institutions, where we have already surpassed certain European Union members”, Djuric said.

While noting that Serbia wanted everything it had done well so far to be recognized, Djuric reiterated that the country wished to have an equal seat at the European table and not be treated as a second-rate state in any way.

The Serbian Foreign Minister assessed that Serbia would complete all the difficult reforms, necessary for admission into the EU, by 2027, expressing the hope that Serbia’s efforts would finally be valorized, 27 years after it had embarked on this political path.

The Minister stated that he also discussed with the High Representative the situation facing the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija, as well as many specific aspects of the violation of collective political and human rights of Serbs.

“I pointed out the fact that systemic discrimination against Serbs in our southern province continues. Yesterday, 100 new public notaries were appointed in Kosovo and Metohija, and not a single one of them is of Serbian nationality, despite a large number of qualified and skilled Serbian applicants”, Djuric emphasized.

The head of Serbian diplomacy concluded that Serbia would continue with intensive diplomatic activity, primarily based on what is the national interest of Serbia, and not only on what was the most popular in political terms.

At the invitation of U.S. President Joseph Biden, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Marko Djuric attended a reception in Washington, D.C., held to mark the 75th anniversary of NATO Alliance.

On that occasion, the head of Serbian diplomacy discussed current regional and international issues with representatives of member and partner countries.

Given that cooperation between Serbia and NATO takes place through the "Partnership for Peace" program, that Serbia has been party to since 2006, Djuric conveyed to his interlocutors that our country was committed to a policy of military neutrality, as well as its openness to further promoting the cooperation through mechanisms available within that program.

Emphasizing that Serbia, as an independent and sovereign state, looked after its national interests, the Minister also pointed out that our country was actively contributing to building peace and stability around the world by participating in numerous peacekeeping missions.

The Minister stated that Serbia, as a credible international actor, was ready to cooperate with foreign partners in preserving security and stability in the Western Balkans, as evidenced by the good cooperation maintained between the Serbian Armed Forces and the KFOR mission in Kosovo and Metohija.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Marko Djuric participated today in Luxembourg at an informal meeting of the ministers of foreign affairs of the member states of the European Union and representatives of the Western Balkan region.

The head of Serbian diplomacy pointed out that Serbia's message at today's meeting was very clear:

"For the new Serbian Government, the implementation of the reform agenda by 2027 is one of the absolute priorities, and we want to be fully prepared by then. This pertains to our economy, but also to the rule of law, democracy, and all other aspects that are important for our full membership”, Djuric said.

He stated that the European Union has a lot to gain from the membership of Serbia and other Western Balkan countries, both when it comes to human capital, and when it comes to our tradition, culture, knowledge, security, energy security and many other aspects.

"I believe that the citizens of Serbia have the right and should be granted access to European Union funds because scientists, students, farmers in Serbia should not have a second-class status compared to farmers, scientists and students in any other country. And we are not only interested in being a secondary market or something like that, but we want a full-fledged chair and an equal place at the table", the head of Serbian diplomacy emphasized.

Speaking about Serbia's alignment with the EU's foreign and security policy, Djuric stated that our country will fully share the common policy upon obtaining the status of a full member.

"When it comes to the stance towards the conflict in Ukraine, from the beginning, Serbia supported all the resolutions of the United Nations upholding the territorial integrity of Ukraine. We have specific reasons why our foreign policy on this issue differs from other member countries, but we expect the European Union to help, so that relations in the region are normalized to a sufficient extent and that the general security and geopolitical situation in our region advances in a way that will enable greater alignment in the future", the Minister said.

In addition to the fact that Serbia desires to raise the level of alignment of its foreign policy with EU policy, according to Djuric, Serbia is also seeking help in solving issues from the past for which the current generations in Serbia are not responsible, and which cannot be solved in a fair way without full involvement of the international community.

When it comes to Kosovo and Metohija, Djuric noted that he informed the participants of today's meeting about the violations of the collective rights of our compatriots in Kosovo and Metohija, but also that he clearly spoke about the need to implement the Brussels Agreement in a stricter, more aggressive manner.

In addition to the above, Djuric said that on the fringes of the meeting, he had a very productive conversation with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, with whom he discussed ways to accelerate Serbia's European integration.

He added that he also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of friendly Benin, a country with which Serbia has fostered friendship since the time of the Non-Aligned Movement, while having a high degree of understanding on topics of national importance for our country.

Finally, Djuric welcomed the upcoming Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and assessed that it will give an additional impetus to the European integration of our entire region.

"There are many other countries here, which believe that the Hungarian Presidency will bring a much-needed tone of reconciliation, cooperation and a focus on additional enlargement to European and foreign policy", Djuric concluded.

Djuric: Serbia will pursue a freedom-loving, nationally responsible foreign policy of an extended hand and cooperation

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, the handover of duties between the outgoing Minister Ivica Dacic and the new Head of Serbian diplomacy, Marko Djuric, was carried out today.
On that occasion, Minister Djuric noted that Serbia would continue with the policy of continuity when it comes to foreign affairs.

"In the period ahead, Serbia will pursue a freedom-loving, nationally responsible foreign policy of an extended hand and cooperation. We are in the business of making friends, strengthening ties and promoting the image of Serbia in the international community", Djuric said.

According to him, Minister Dacic had fought bravely and decisively for the interests of Serbia in previous years, as part of the team led by President Aleksandar Vucic.

"We will work in harmony and unity, I look forward to continuing our friendly and professional cooperation, both through the ministries we are heading and together with Prime Minister Vucevic and President of the Republic Vucic, we will strive to act harmoniously, dedicatedly, diligently and in the interest of all citizens", Djuric stated.

Minister Dacic, who will be heading the Ministry of the Interior in the new Serbian Government, wished the new Serbian Foreign Minister success and the best of luck in his work, so that we as a country and people could successfully overcome the difficulties we are facing.

"For many years, the new minister Marko Djuric and I have been part of a team led by President of the Republic Aleksandar Vucic that has continuously dealt with the most difficult and most important state and national issues since 2012. I am glad that this is in some way an expression of state and political continuity when it comes to the positions and conception of our foreign policy", Dacic said.

Dacic emphasized that the common goal of the ministries of foreign affairs and the interior would be to defend state and national interests, and that the new Head of Serbian diplomacy would have his full support to that end.

STATEMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

On the occasion of 10 December, the international Human Rights Day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia reaffirms its commitment to the principles and values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted on this day in 1948.

The principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights have been the foundation for the development of international law in this field, and of the international system for the promotion and protection of human rights, as a unique achievement of modern civilization. It is incumbent upon us today to safeguard and strengthen the international system ensuring respect for human rights, to develop human rights standards, control the implementation of commitments, and also to continue cooperating with international and regional institutions on the protection of human rights.

Serbia is fully committed to the universal values of human rights and implementing in practice the international legal instruments relating to human rights. Our continued cooperation with the Human Rights Council mechanisms in the framework of the United Nations, with the Council of Europe and the mechanisms of the OSCE human dimension, represents an important segment of activities carried out by all state authorities, thus demonstrating our consistent commitment to the implementation of international human rights standards.

The international Human Rights Day is an opportunity to point out once again that Serb and other non-Albanian population is being deprived of its rights in Kosovo and Metohija and to call again on the international community to ensure the respect for the guaranteed international human rights norms and contribute to creating conditions for the return of internally displaced persons and giving them back their usurped property.
